Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has purchased EirMed LLC, a Menomonie, Wis.-based medical injection molder. Trelleborg does not "see any immediate or major changes in the workforce or management," as a result of the acquisition, it said in an emailed statement to Plastics News.

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions is part of Trelleborg, Sweden-based Trelleborg AB, a publicly traded polymer company with roots in rubber manufacturing.

"Part of our strategy is to expand our capabilities beyond thermoplastic molding and liquid silicone rubber," Linda Muroski, president of Trelleborg Global Healthcare and Medical, said in an April 29 news release.

"EirMed is a much-needed addition to our business, bringing extensive medical device assembly experience and expanding our capabilities and capacity in thermoplastics. EirMed enables us to enter markets where we previously have not had a presence, specifically the bioresorbable and dental markets," she added.

"We have customers asking us all the time to simplify their supply chain to provide more value," Rick Curtis, president of EirMed, said. "Some want us to source all components, whether they're plastic or not, and then to assemble and package the finished device. Simplifying our customers' supply chains in this way will enable them to become more efficient, ultimately reducing the complexity and cost of building their products and speeding the time to market for new devices."

"We can take customers from design and concept at our Rapid Development Center to annuity business, making all components in-house. This reduces the need for customers to manage outside vendors, greatly simplifying their supply chains," Muroski added.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. EirMed has annual sales of about $10 million, according to the Trelleborg release.

Peter Hahn, president of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, added that technical polymer-based precision components are "a strategically important area for us."

"The acquisition gives us access to new markets, applications and customers, while EirMed's solutions will gain access to our broad sales channels," Hahn added. "The company also has exciting development projects in bioresorbable polymers."

EirMed designs and manufactures technical precision plastic injection molded components, mainly in medical devices, used in minimally invasive surgery, in-vitro diagnostics and orthopedics.
